There is a vast range of therapies out there to complement mainstream Western European medicine, many of which are becoming generally accepted. A number of these are of particular interest when it comes to human movement and musculoskeletal health.
Musculoskeletal approaches can be broadly categorised as either structural (focused on the physical components of the body), functional (focused on our neurological, emotional or spiritual interaction with our bodies), or a hybrid of both. Scientific findings aside, common sense tells us that the two are inextricably linked.
It can be a very controversial subject amongst practitioners, but as a guide we'd suggest the following: Structural: functional resistance training, pilates, chiropractics, physiotherapy, osteopathy, rolfing and deep tissue massage. Functional: Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, cranial sacral therapy and cranial osteopathy. Hybrids: bodywork and yoga.
